Unlocking your Android phone’s bootloader is the first step to rooting and flashing custom ROMs. If you want to try any custom ROM or do any sort of customization then you must have unlocked bootloader in your phone. It is the very first pre-requirement for customization. 

NOTE : It will void your phone's warranty and may erase your data. So backup your data first and proceed with caution.

  1. Make sure you have a mi account if not then create it.
  2. Now go to http://en.miui.com/unlock.
  3. Click on unlock now and login with your mi account.
  4. Download Mi unlock tool.
  5. Extract the zip file and run the miflash_unlock.exe file.
  6. Click on Agree and log in with your mi account.
  7. If it shows "Your device isn't supported by Mi Unlock" then simply click on Go button.
  8. Now apply for the unlocking permission.
  9. Now you need to write an application why you want to unlock the bootloader so give your genuine reason and submit the application.
  10. Now the application will process by Mi team manually so it may 3 to 7 days to get permission to unlock the phone.
  11. Now open up the mi unlock tool and sign in with mi account.
  12. If you see "Not connected to the phone" then you need to boot your phone in fastboot mode. To boot your phone in fastboot mode, switch off your phone and hold volume down and power button simultaneously.
  13. You will see a mi bunny with fastboot written there. Connect your phone to your PC with USB cable.
  14. Now in mi unlock tool click on "unlock" option.
  15. Now your device will go through 3 step.
    The most important thing is if the process results in failure then you need to try it on another day because it is an official method and your device might not have got the permission to unlock it. You can try this unlock the phone every day after submission of your application is done. Any time Xiaomi can allow you to unlock your phone.
